Most people used to make a lot of their own things but there used to be merchants selling a few things in the market.

Example:
In the desert the only transportation that was reliable was the camel. The camel could last for a long time without needing water and could carry people and baggage. People have a lot of ease in traveling now and transportation is much better than it was in old times.
